The symptoms people sit on

Urology has a particular problem: its symptoms feel private, so people wait. Surveys in many countries find the same pattern, months of leaking, straining or getting up at night before anyone mentions it to a doctor, and the same is true of the one symptom that must never wait, blood in the urine. The medical reality runs the other way: urinary symptoms are among the most common complaints in primary care, the examinations are routine, and the treatments have never been better.

A useful rule: if a urinary symptom is on your mind often enough that you searched for it, it has earned a mention at an appointment. Doctors would far rather hear about a symptom that turns out to be nothing than miss the one that mattered.
